In 2019 there were 15,815 fires in non-dwelling buildings.
Is it time to get your fire equipment serviced?

Your fire extinguishers need to work straight away in case of an emergency, so it’s important to make sure that any fire extinguishers in your office, factory, warehouse or other place of work are serviced and checked regularly. Standard fire extinguishers are highly pressurised and if damaged or corroded can burst and cause serious injury, or even death.

Fire extinguishers need to work straight away when needed, so it is vital they are regularly checked and serviced. Fire extinguishers are pressurised vessels that can burst when corroded or damaged and have been known to cause serious injury and even death.

The Regulatory Fire Reform (Fire Safety Order) 2005 states that fire fighting equipment “must be subject to a suitable system of maintenance and are maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.”

Monthly Visual Inspections

You should be checking your fire extinguishers monthly, whether they are water, foam, CO2, wet chemical or powder. These checks don’t need to take up much of your time at all, but they will identify potential issues in your equipment, and ultimately save lives.

A monthly inspection compromises of a quick check of the pressure gauge, headcap pin, seal and of course, the fire extinguisher itself. The location should be checked in accordance with your fire plan, and should be either on the wall bracket or extinguisher stand and be easily visible.

Yearly Basic Service

You must have your fire extinguishers serviced every 12 months with a “basic service” and this must be done in accordance to BS 5036-6. CoMech’s Fire extinguisher technicians have the experience, training and tools to perform this service for you.
